Darien, Connecticut’s 1st GREEN Village Initiative.

Darien, Connecticut’s 1st GREEN Village Initiative.

Posted April 22nd, 2011.

What better way to celebrate  Earth Day 2011 than to announce that Darien, Connecticut will have its first GREEN Village Initiative this Tuesday, April 26th. Open to the public and all are welcomed and YES you are Invited!

This kick-off meeting will be held at 9:30 am at the Darien Nature Center  April 26th, 2011. Please forward this message to anyone you know that would be interested in attending.

The mission of the GVI is to bring together community members from Darien and neighboring towns, to make environmental and community change through local action. Members of GVI Westport, Fairfield and Ridgefield will be present to talk and share their ideas, initiatives and experiences.  The plan is that GVI members from the different towns will meet periodically to exchange ideas and to leverage experience and work done on various ‘Green’ projects. The ‘Choose to Reuse in Darien’ team will provide insights into the support we received from GVI members in Westport, who have worked towards and successfully passed an ordinance in Westport to ban plastic shopping bags.

In addition to the Plastic Bag Ban project, there are several projects listed below, that we can potentially work together on.  Feel free to bring your ideas to the meeting for additional projects that are of interest to you:

·         FARM AND SCHOOL GARDENS

·         HOME ENERGY AUDITS

·         RECYCLING PROGRAMS

·         CLEAR CUTTING

·         CHEMICALS, PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES IN OUR ENVIRONMENT

·         RESIDENCES IN AQUIFER RECHARGING ZONES

Since some folks cannot make it to a daytime meeting, going forward if there is enough interest, we’ll have alternate monthly meetings in the evenings.
